Sadly, I need to sell my cherished Excelsior Manxman J12 Special. This bike was found at the back of a garage in 2008 in a partially disassembled condition. The engine was stripped, examined and reassembled by one of the country’s most experienced Excelsior Manxman engineering specialists. The original silencer contained a newspaper from the mid-1960s giving an indication of when the bike was stored away.
The engine runs well and the bike has been ridden and displayed at the Festival of 1000 Bikes and at various other static shows.
Registered in Middlesex shortly after the 1938 motorcycle show, this bike would have been the first J12/S machine despatched by the Excelsior factory. This unrestored 350 Manxman is undoubtedly one of the rarest Manxman machines ever offered for sale .
The frame engine, gearbox and wheels etc. would have left the factory in 1938, despatched as a new model for 1939. This model was catalogued as being of similar specification to the 350 production racing machine with bronze head etc.
To highlight this machines rarity , one of the Excelsior factory engine record books shows that only one Manxman 350cc Special engine was assembled during the first 4 months of 1939 and so it may be assumed from other information to hand that very few of these expensive motorcycle were ever built. Not officially listed for sale in 1940 the total manufacturing run would have been counted in single figures.
The dedicated worldwide group of Excelsior enthusiasts are being offered an opportunity to purchase a very special unrestored motorcycle.
The bike is not currently registered for use on the road.
